Learn to Walk Away

by Subomi Plumptre

Three years ago, two quotations redefined the nature of my friendships. It was the year I decided I couldn’t get along with a passive-aggressive person in intimate quarters. I would not accept an adult who uses silence, moods, records of wrongs and their own version of events as manipulative weapons in friendship.

I can’t remember the exact quotations, so I’ll paraphrase them.

“It takes two people to create strife. If you remove yourself, there is no strife.”

“People will always create drama but you don’t need to attend the performance.”

Many times, mean people continue to behave badly because they assume the other person won’t leave.

Three years ago, I learnt to walk away. I learnt to protect my peace, for out of it issues creativity and productivity.
