Hidden Idols: What’s Competing With God In Your Life?
by Subomi Plumptre

Idolatry can be personal. No one will check under your bed for idols if you choose to keep them there. Then there are the idols that reside in our hearts. These are the things we give our time, attention, and energy to more than God.
For me, intellect and work became idols. My intellect made me second-guess God instead of trusting Him fully. Work became a safe space where I felt in control, and could focus on achievement.
Finding Your Idols
You can uncover your own idols. Start by tracking your time for a week. List the top three activities you spend the most hours on. Now ask: which of these did God send you to do – and which did you choose for yourself?
Even in what God called you to do, ask: am I spending so much time on this assignment that I’m neglecting intimacy with God? Am I caring for my soul and character, or just my calling?
Things You Can’t Let Go
Consider the things you’d struggle to release immediately should God ask you to walk away. Have they become idols?
Need For Validation
Do you crave the dopamine rush of social media comments, and notifications? Is your worth subtly entangled with online approval? Are you feeding self-worship?
Tearing Down Altars
Once you identify your idols, ask God to help you to destroy them completely. Ask Him not to let you go until you’re free.
Fasting helps. Depriving yourself of those things for days at a time until you stop needing them.
Invitation To Return
This year, prioritize God above all else by laying down your idols. Will you respond?
