You Need Values to Truly Succeed

by Subomi Plumptre

Here’s what I learned in over two decades of running projects – many organisations underestimate the personal drive, loyalty and sense of responsibility that’s required for a successful venture. They assume process makes projects run. No. Character does. Projects are run by humans with value systems.

In the same vein, many young people assume values are soft and so, money becomes their only measurable route to success. Money is good. But, the happiest rich people I know have one thing in common. They maintained their core. And so, they now have the time, peace and friendships to really enjoy wealth.

They don’t worry about people trying to kill or steal from them. They have money and they have a good life. They are not trying to buy salvation with social responsibility or charity that lacks depth. They have family members and friends who sincerely want to be with them.

I try as much as I can to teach my mentees about character, but some of them are stubborn. They are like fat people who want to lose weight, yet avoid eating less or exercising. Ten years later, they are still fat.

Some young people also think money comes via linear progression; that it can only be a result of what they are doing now. And so, they keep hustling with meagre results. They don’t know that many times, people plant seeds in unrelated places that unexpectedly germinate in future.

The cycle of life insists you must learn your lessons. Lack of character will come back to bite you. Always remember – nature is unforgiving. It has the luxury of one thing you don’t – time.
