Nonconformist God

by Subomi Plumptre

Be yourself. Nothing you do or that you are surprises God. He is the one who gradually modulates you as you spend time with him. So please, show up.

Read your Bible. Ask the Holy Spirit about what you’ve read. Let ChatGPT give you additional references and thought lines. Then be quiet. Be still and let God speak. He doesn’t need to be audible.

God speaks to me in movies, music, and books. He would ask that I go the cinema at 10am to watch a random love story. Then he’ll tell me his instructions using the movie as an illustration.

Another time, as I watched Zootopia 2, I cried deeply as he explained my failure of leadership and what I did wrong.

Every destiny altering decision; every life-transformation has come from a book, including the 66 in scripture. The most recent was John Bevere’s Holy Spirit which ushered in my new relationship with the Spirit of Life.

My Father knows I rarely listen to worship music. He understands I have personal tastes, and so, he gave me two songs of promise this year:

Gozi by FireboyDML and Pheelz. He asked that I dance to it with all my might many times. I have never danced the way I did.

Then in a low season, he brought All the Love by Ayra Starr, an unspoken promise that if I would just give in and stop being hard, he would love me specially.

Maybe you’ve been looking for God in a formulaic way, but perhaps he’s been right there all along in what you already know and love.

Holy Spirit has become my fascinating source of creativity and wisdom. He is my troublesome disruptor who keeps surprising me with his repertoire of teaching aids.

Jesus is the King I look up to; my standard for character, humanity and wisdom.

And the Father, his love is so deep, that he keeps chasing me. There is no length to which he won’t go to find or help me.

In word.

In song.

In film.
