It’s Okay to Challenge the Status Quo.

by Subomi Plumptre

I believe it’s okay to challenge the status quo.

Recently, I had the privilege of speaking to the new group of Commonwealth Study Conference Leaders about “Conversations With Purpose.” As an alumna, I also spoke at the Global Leaders Programme developed with Google Digital Academy for senior cross-sector leaders.

At the end of the session, they asked me to share some final words. I said it’s alright to change the status quo. It may be exhausting, but it can become the greatest expression of your most authentic self — your happiest and most glorious self.

I’m an introvert succeeding in an extroverted world. A finance professional without a finance background. An African black woman thriving in a profession dominated by Western white men. Yet, I’ve never let those labels define who I am.

I’m simply passionate about helping the middle class build wealth, so every role I take and every job I do serves that mission. I do what I must so I can do what I truly want — my mission. I refuse to be boxed in. That’s why I have the courage to ask, “Why not?” or think, “How?” when people claim something can’t be done.

Friend, focus on your mission — not just your roles. Don’t hold on too tightly to them. Don’t lose yourself in titles and jobs. Keep asking, “Is what I’m doing moving me closer to my mission or further away from it?”

And don’t be afraid to change direction when you need to.
