If It Ain’t Broke

by Subomi Plumptre

I haven’t been sleeping well for months.

During the Christmas holidays, I traced my Kafkaesque dreams to a constant pain in my neck. I’d spent a few days of the Christmas holidays with a friend and had begged for a hard throw pillow to sleep on, to relieve the pain. Then I slept like a baby.

I promptly appropriated the pillow but at the last moment decided to change the cover for a colour matching my bedroom theme. As you can imagine, I slept horribly and shouldn’t have switched things.

Isn’t that just like life? Sometimes, we fall in love and then wonder how much better the person could be if we fixed something about them. We forget they are the sum of everything they are not and end up breaking them.

We do the same with business. Rushing to upgrade processes without listening to the folks on ground. Destroying the sacred on the altar of the popular.

Worse still, after realizing what we have done, instead of retracing our steps, we are overcome by unproductive pride and shame. “What will people think of me?” or “I’ve spent too much time, emotions, and money.” And that’s how we do not admit our mistakes until it is too late.
