Gender Wars

by Subomi Plumptre

There must be a reason why God made man, both male and female. There’s a reason x and y chromosomes interact to produce different genders. There’s a reason the Church is referred to as a woman. There’s also a reason why in the body of Christ, there is neither Jew nor Greek, Male nor Female. Our primary identity is grounded in love, not labels, positions and roles. Every role is focused on an overall purpose. When purpose is lost, roles become meaningless and routinised. They become empty and oppressive.

I think if humans focused on love, a lot of the gender competition will be rendered moot. Rarely do people feel threatened by love, unless there’s emotional baggage, in which case, they need both love and therapy.

I find it instructive that in Christian scripture, Apostle Paul first asked both genders to submit to one another, before he spelt out responsibilities for both genders, children and even domestic staff. Without a foundation of love and mutual submission, there will be no headway in human relationships. Without preferring one another in love, there will always be a jostle for preeminence.

I think the world needs healing and maybe women need healing even more. From the female perspective, a lot of the gender role push-back, comes from a place of deep pain, abuse, neglect and terror. Many women in traditional societies played by the “rules”, only to get burnt, so now they are making their own rules. Sadly, they did not consult the men. They are like captives intent on their freedom, regardless of the collateral damage. Until their anger is fully spent, society won’t really see what it has become. Because women are primary caregivers, we can’t know how the children will turn out. Because men derive much of their validation and relevance from work and from providing for their families, they won’t realise just how much they are at risk of losing.

Simply put, in the Gender Wars, everyone loses.
