Entrepreneurial Overwhelm
by Subomi Plumptre

I recall attending a webinar where a renowned Producer & Director spoke about the struggles creative entrepreneurs face.
One thing that struck me was when she said she often looked at artisans and envied them. They had clear job descriptions, skills, and roles. They woke up every day knowing what was expected of them. Only entrepreneurs understand what she meant.
On a typical day as a business owner, I don’t know what’s waiting for me. I’m always fighting fires I did not cause, and on some days, I wear different hats. One day, I’m Financial Controller. Another day, I show up as Chief Operating Officer.
There are times I’ve planned my schedule, and then a regulator sends an unexpected letter or a staff member tries to steal from the company. I then have to wear the Compliance hat.
That level of multi-tasking and unpredictability can weary even the toughest souls – especially in an already chaotic environment like Nigeria. Your nervous system will be on steroids, and you will long for simpler times.
Once your company gets past the growth phase, and your management team is in place, things eventually calm down.
That’s why, as an entrepreneur, don’t settle for incompetent hires. Recruit people who can actually own roles and hold things down. It’s better to break a role into smaller parts and then find competent people to do each item than to hire a senior, incapable soul.
If you hire the wrong person, you will still end up doing the work yourself. Stop waiting until you find the perfect staff. Even if you do, you may not be able to afford them. Instead, break up each role and find suitable people right now.
Best wishes, fellow entrepreneur.
