My Rights and Yours

by Subomi Plumptre

In society, rights inevitably overlap and clash.

Simple illustration: you have the right to put a TV programme on the air if you tick the proper regulatory boxes. Similarly, I have the right to lobby to take it off the air if I tick the right legislative boxes. We are both exercising our rights, albeit with opposing intentions.

Democracy means the best or most noble ideas won’t necessarily dominate in society. Rather what triumphs, is whatever can be legally proven, based on the constitution of that society. Everyone’s rights are theoretically subjected to the constitution.

Eventually, the law itself can be amended and shaped by propaganda, politics, power, advocacy, money and lobbying. It therefore stands to reason, that if you are not playing in any of those areas, you may not have a voice in society and your personal values may eventually be regulated out of existence.

If you aren't an active citizen, someday your personal values may be regulated out of existence. Click To Tweet
